Melanie secures funding to breathe new life into local playgrounds
New Government funding will help transform playgrounds across North East Lincolnshire, after the area was selected as one of 66 communities set to benefit from an £18 million national investment.
The funding is targeted at places facing the highest levels of income deprivation affecting children, alongside limited access to quality play spaces. It will support the refurbishment of existing playgrounds, purchase of new playground equipment, and the creation of safer, more welcoming environments for families.
Local MP Melanie Onn has welcomed the announcement, having previously raised concerns about the condition of some parks in Grimsby and Cleethorpes. She recently visited a playground on the Willows estate, a place she visited often during her childhood, to highlight the need for urgent improvements and the opportunity this funding brings.
Melanie Onn, Member of Parliament for Great Grimsby and Cleethorpes said:
“I know from my own experience growing up here just how important these spaces are for children and families. It is upsetting to see many of our playgrounds fall into disrepair, with only limited equipment left and too often being littered with broken glass and rubbish.
“This funding is a really positive step forward. It gives us the chance to restore playgrounds like the one on the Willows and make sure they are safe, welcoming places once again.
“Every child deserves somewhere local to play, and every family deserves spaces they can enjoy together. This investment will help make our communities better places to live.”
